What is CBD?

  • Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of 104 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK425762/

  • CBD comes from the male hemp plant and is not psychoactive, which means you won’t get high. CBD supports our body effectively due to our body’s endogenous cannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system response. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19675519

Why use CBD?

  • CBD is effective in boosting the natural functions of our body’s endogenous cannabinoid system, helping our body regulate itself in many different ways.

  • Scientific and clinical studies have shown promise in aiding in the treatment of the following: arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism, MS, chronic pain, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, antibiotic-resilient infections, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders.

Benefits

Pain Relief:

Anxiety and Depression:

Can Alleviate Cancer-Related Symptoms:
  • One study looked at the effects of CBD and THC in 177 people with cancer-related pain who did not experience relief from pain medication. Those treated with an extract containing both compounds experienced a significant reduction in pain compared to those who received only THC extract. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19896326

  • CBD may also help reduce chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, which are among the most common chemotherapy-related side effects for those with cancer. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16983116

  • A study showed that CBD inhibited the spread of aggressive breast cancer cells in mice. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18025276

  • These of course are early studies in animals, so more studies need to be done to understand its full impact on humans.

May Reduce Acne:

Neuroprotective Properties:

Heart Health:
  • High blood pressure is linked to higher risks of several health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and metabolic syndrome. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3699411/

  • Clinical studies are showing that CBD has a positive effect on high blood pressure.

  • One recent study treated 10 healthy men with one dose of 600 mg of CBD oil and found it reduced resting blood pressure, compared to a placebo. The same study also gave the men stress tests that normally increase blood pressure. Interestingly, the single dose of CBD led the men to experience a smaller blood pressure increase than normal in response to these tests. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5470879/

  • A study found that treatment with CBD reduced oxidative stress and prevented heart damage in diabetic mice with heart disease. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3026637/

Sleep:
  • According to the National Sleep Foundation, 50 to 70 million U.S. adults experience symptoms of a sleep disorder. About 30 to 40 percent of the population will experience insomnia at some point in their lives, and about 10 to 15 percent of adults will deal with chronic insomnia. https://www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/sleep-studies

  • A seemingly inactive state of sleep is a dynamic and critical process that helps us store memories, build immunity, repair tissue, regulate metabolism and blood pressure, control appetite and blood sugar, and process learning, along with a myriad of other physiological processes – all of which are regulated by the endocannabinoid system. https://www.projectcbd.org/medicine/cannabis-sleep-disturbances

  • Sir William B. O’Shaughnessy in 1843 led to studies that underscored the remedial properties of “Indian hemp” for sleep disorders.

  • Of all anesthetics ever proposed, Indian hemp is the one that produced a narcotism most closely resembling natural sleep without causing any extraordinary excitement of the vessels, any particular suspension of secretions, or without fear of a dangerous reaction. https://www.projectcbd.org/medicine/cannabis-sleep-disturbances

  • Preliminary studies are finding that CBD has treatment for insomnia. CBD may hold promise for REM sleep behavior disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28349316

Other Possible Benefits:
  • Although more clinical studies are needed, there are early ideas that CBD can help in the following areas.

  • Antipsychotic effects: Studies suggest that CBD may help people with schizophrenia and other mental disorders by reducing psychotic symptoms. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25667194

  • Substance abuse treatment: CBD has been shown to modify circuits in the brain related to drug addiction. In rats, CBD has been shown to reduce morphine dependence and heroin-seeking behavior. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4444130/

  • Anti-tumor effects: In test-tube and animal studies, CBD has demonstrated anti-tumor effects. In animals, it has been shown to prevent the spread of breast, prostate, brain, colon, and lung cancer. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25916739

  • Diabetes prevention: In diabetic mice, treatment with CBD reduced the incidence of diabetes by 56% and significantly reduced inflammation. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16698671

Things to consider when choosing what CBD product is best for you

  • CBD is being produced without any regulation, resulting in products that vary widely in quality, said Marcel Bonn-Miller, an adjunct assistant professor of psychology in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

  • Meanwhile, a 2017 study led by Bonn-Miller found that nearly 7 of 10 CBD products didn't contain the amount of marijuana extract promised on the label.

  • Nearly 43 percent of the products contained too little CBD, while about 26 percent contained too much, Bonn-Miller said.

  • About 1 in 5 CBD products contained the intoxicating pot chemical THC, Bonn-Miller and his colleagues found. https://www.webmd.com/pain-management/news/20180507/cbd-oil-all-the-rage-but-is-it-safe-effective#1

Things to consider if you are taking medication

  • When taking CBD orally, it is metabolized through the liver, and the main enzymes to metabolize CBD are Cytochrome P450-complex enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for also metabolizing around 60% of pharmaceutical drugs.

  • CBD monopolizes the metabolism process, which will interfere with pharmaceutical drugs. There are negatives and positives to this interaction…but one should consult a medical professional before using CBD.

  • Some medications that will be interfered with are macrolides, calcium channel blockers, benzodiazepines, cyclosporine, sildenafil, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, haloperidol, antiretrovirals, some statins, many antidepressants, opioids, antipsychotics, and beta blockers. https://www.solcbd.com/blogs/news/118305477-what-pharmaceutical-drugs-can-interfere-with-cbd

Things to consider - side effects

  • More than 20,000 studies have been done in the past 15 years on cannabis, hemp, and cannabinoids, and the results have been overwhelmingly supportive of the therapeutic potential and viability of CBD oil. Still, it is important to know that there are potential side effects and cautions before using CBD.

  • Possible side effects of using CBD oil, such as fatigue, dry mouth, lightheadedness, hypotension, and impaired motor functions…but this is more in high dosages and not in moderate therapeutic amounts. https://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/oils/cbd-oil-benefits-uses-side-effects.html

  • Considering the long list of side effects in the most common pharmaceuticals being prescribed, CBD as a standalone treatment seems to be a much healthier alternative to that of a manufactured drug. https://cbdeducationonline.com/what-are-the-side-effects-of-cbd-oil-in-humans/

  • Blood Pressure: One of the notable soothing benefits of CBD oil is its effect on blood pressure, helping protect heart health and promote calmness in the body. However, if you are already taking medication for hypertension, combining this with CBD oil can potentially cause dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension). https://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/oils/cbd-oil-benefits-uses-side-effects.html

CBD and Pets - what gives?

  • CBD can help pets in many different aspects - reduces anxiety, depression, seizures, and epilepsy, relieves pain, aids with bowel disease, reduces inflammation, protects the nervous system, and can improve appetite.

Reducing Anxiety
  • Pets can suffer from separation anxiety and noise anxiety, and CBD has been extensively studied in the area of anxiety. CBD has been shown to aid in the areas of anxiety with travel (car rides of any distance), thunderstorms, having company over, and fireworks.
